Option Left Arrow does not skip backwards a word but types the letter D #851

On Mac when I hold the Option key and and press the left arrow to skip back a word (which works in the mac terminal app) instead of skipping back a word it types the letter D. I haven't been able to find a key combination for skipping back a word.
