getting SDL initialization failed error running on OS X

Steps to reproduce problem:
1. Install latest gource from MacPorts.
2. cd into a git repo.
3. type 'gource' at the prompt.

Expected to see the gource window open. Instead, I get this error:

gource: SDL initialization failed - X11 driver not configured with OpenGL
Try 'gource --help' for more information.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Gource v0.38, Mac OS X 10.8.2 on a MacBook Pro that has had no problem running 
Gource before. Also running XQuartz 2.7.4 (xorg-server 1.13.0).

It sounds like it might be due to a change in macports which happened a few 
weeks ago: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/37562
