Variety in application-application activities #16

@siwelwerd Recently overheard a MechE student in my Diff EQ class complaining that too many of the applications of linear algebra we cover are comp sci (crypto+PageRank). It might be worthwhile to have another option (not necessarily MechE, but it's probably fair to not double up on comp sci).

siwelwerd commented 5 years ago

Right now there is a geology application, a statics application (Mech E?), and then two CS (crypto, PageRank). So I would probably argue with the student a bit ;). That said, I am not in love with the cryptography one, so I will work on coming up with another one to replace that. I wonder if there is a way to do a circuits one without getting into the DE aspects.

Student argues that statics is Civil Engineering, not Mechanical. :man_shrugging: But I feel statics is at least in the ballpark; I think replacing crypto with an Electrical Engineering circuits application to have a more balanced coverage might be an okay solution.

I'm late to this conversation! I think I'd make a sales pitch for some kind of predator-prey model or find the steady state matrix or something like that.

Hmm, I don't even know how to unclose this. Wrong button!
