Seems to work fine on my tests (minus the lack of progress when extracting, due to /bin/package being too quiet :-D).
For my use cases, mostly comparing .hpkg contents when doing HaikuPorts-related work, or "viewing/extracting" just a file or two... this comes in pretty handy already.
