Perform allocation in parallel.

Things I'm not sure about in this PR:

In case of interruption, I return what was allocated so far and set the interrupt flag
No progress log anymore. Just a message per allocation
No currently allocated size in the allocation log

Can you reproduce this without all the extraneous changes? I'd like to see a PR where the only changes are to allocateBackingBuffers so that the desired change can be reviewed in isolation. All the other changes here could be candidates for other issues and/or pull requests but don't belong in this PR.
