I've tested this with smooth stone and sheawood. Neither set of pieces casts sun relative shadows, or other shadows to that matter. The only shadow effect I can see looks to be some sort of fuzzy darkness glaring around the pieces. It's a major problem, as light from light sources just goes through the walls, making for a crippled base.
