New Insight: Cats vs. Dogs #2014

Open adampash opened 10 years ago

adampash commented 10 years ago

One-liner

How many times the user mentions/likes dogs vs. cats in posts.

Full explainer

This insight compares how many times the user mentions/shares/faves things related to dogs v. cats. It should be light and playful.

Audience for the insight

This insight works for Twitter and Facebook (possibly Instagram).

How often this insight runs

If we run annually, it could be any time of year. Editorially, we could do around days like "Bring your pet to work day", but we can hold off on that for now.

Update: October 4, World Animal Day

Headline

Emphasis: High

Body

(Order sentence above in descending order, so it would be "...mentions dogs 18 times compared to 5 cat mentions" or "... mentions cats 12 times compared to 4 dog mentions.")

If percentage of total mentions is > 75%, append to last sentence:

If baseline exists: That's compared to %old_dog_total dog mentions and %old_cat_total mentions last year.

Then: Battles are won and lost, but the Dogs vs. Cats War rages on.

Criteria and logic

If this is a first run, search all of the user's previous posts and the text of posts they've faved/liked or retweeted/shared. Otherwise search the previous years' posts. Searching for the following strings:

Dog matches: dog dogs pup puppy puppies :dog: :dog2:

Cat matches: cat cats kitten kitty kitties :cat: :cat2:

(The emoji isn't all that fair, since there's the whole category of cats making "people" faces.)

Minimum threshold: At least 3 matches for either dogs or cats.

It would be great if it were possible to do this as an aggregate across Twitter/Facebook/Instagram.

Point is, when it comes to cats v dogs, there are no shortage of CC images on Flickr.

Yearly - is this on a specific date of the year, or always one year after the first time? Or on a specific date, as long as it's been a year since the last time?

Should we just pick one of the (appropriate) hero images at random each run?

Good q, and again, important calendar question. I think probably we should just do one time a year, on a specific date. This feels like a good fall-ish insight to me, so let's aim for sometime in September for now? I'm assuming timing will change a lot once I get the calendar more fleshed out.

Oh, and re: hero image: Yeah, I think at random works. I can hunt for more images if dimension constraints are a problem for any of the above @cdmoyer

@cdmoyer let's make this one October 4, which is apparently World Animal Day!

Headline has to have "Cats and Dogs, living together. Madness." If it's a tie.

Ha. Added!
