ai, eps, pdf thumbs are unreliable #75

I know different variations on this issue have been posted elsewhere, but I
have not seen my exact cluster of problems. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit with
Creative Suite 6 as the default handler for ai, eps, and pdf files. Despite
installing this: http://www.pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/#thumb and
endless refreshes, reboots, and cache clears, thumbnails for ai, eps, and pdf
files are unreliable. This occurs regardless of whether "Prefer image file
embedded thumbnails" is enabled or disabled in Sagethumbs options, and occurs
regardless of how high I set "Maximum size of image file."

Sometimes I see them and sometimes I don't, with no pattern that I can detect.
For example, sometimes all the thumbnails for ai files in directory X are
present but none of the thumbnails for ai files in directory Y are present.
When I clear the cache, the situation is the exact opposite: all the thumbnails
for ai files in directory Y are present but none of the thumbnails for ai files
in directory X are present. Sometimes when I open an Explorer window with 100
pdfs, half of the files have thumbnails and the other half don't, as if
Sagethumbs gave up in the middle of making thumbnails.

No offense to the makers of Sagethumbs, whose work is much appreciated and who
are giving us this great software for free. But still, I must ask: why is
something as basic as thumbnails for standard image file types not a solved
problem in 2014? K-Lite Codec Pack, for example, long ago solved this problem
perfectly for any conceivable type of video file. What is the deal with image
files?

Windows uses several caches and strange algorithms to extract data from files,
sometimes all works fine but sometimes it can sleep for ... er... some time.
Thats why on every step of experimentation with options you must clear caches
and re-load Explorer i.e. run "clearmgr" (check both SageThumbs and Windows
caches to clear) and re-log to Windows.

What's "clearmgr" ? Is that different from the "clear..." button in SageThumbs
options?

cleanmgr.exe - Windows system utility to clean unused data.

That doesn't seem to help. I just don't understand why everything would be
perfect in XP but is completely broken now in 7. Why are we going backwards?
