Subtitles displaying as underscores

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Playing the movie when subtitle definition is 1255 as it is supposed to be
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
instead of hebrew letters I see ______ for example "___?"
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

If you are transcoding a media file, which engine are you using (mencoder, 
avisynth/mencoder, tsmuxer?)
Mencoder

Please provide any additional information below and PLEASE JOIN debug.log file

I have the same issue and find the solution, See issue# 897
Basically copy mencoder.exe from 1.10.51 to your new installation.

I had the same problem with 1.20.412 and just got it fixed. You need to 
check(enable) "ASS/SSA subtitles" in MEncoder config screen and also check 
"Fontconfig". Chinese subtitle now works perfectly. I want to use new MEncoder 
because I think it's faster.

i'm trying to get chinese subtitles to display but i am completely 
unsuccessful. i tried copying the old mencoder.exe from 1.10.51, tried using 
media server 1.10.51, tried all sorts of combinations of settings, language 
priority to chi, cp936, cp950, cp1252, tried changing the character set on my 
ps3 to match, tried enabling ass/asa, turned fontconfig on, tried converting 
the subtitles file to utf8, unicode, big5. when i select a truetype font the 
subtitles disappear completely. i tried a bunch of different fonts, arial 
unicode, simsun, etc, all of them result in the subtitles going away 
completely. i tried changing the subfont.ttf in C:\Program Files (x86)\PS3 
Media Server\win32\mplayer to simsun and some other fonts as well, but that 
made no change either.

Sorry if my English is not good...

Thanks to God Finally i found the solution after 2 days of testing
Now subtitles working flawlessly with arabic language with mp4 ext (no lines 
appear like before) 
I Think it will work also for chinese,korean and other languages.

FIRST: You must copy only 2 files (mencoder & mencoder_mt) from Ps3 Media 
Server 1.10.51 and paste it in your installation folder (Programs files 
{x86}\PS3 Media server\win32) which is the version i have Ps3 Media Server 
1.30.1

SECOND: Install avisynth 2.5.7 only because another versions has issue and also 
downlad plugin vsfilter.dll (24.6.2009) copy and paste in (Programs files 
{x86}\Avisynth 2.5\plugins)

When i tried this method everything is working great for me in movies no 
corrupted data, no slow motion, no fast motion no subtitles issue.

I hope this will help and let me know if there is any problem after trying this 
method

Hi Karim,

I tried your method exactly, but it does not work. With exernal subtitle, it 
does not show at all, with Embeded sutbtile, english can be displayed correctly 
but Chinese display either just lines like "_________", or numbers like 
"cn000,0000" etc. my system is window 7 X86. 

I stayed with 1.20.412 for quite a long time, it worked perfect with all the 
subtiles, either external or embeded, chinese or English worked without any 
problem. But now I have to use newer version because more and more MKV files I 
downloaded recently can not be played on 1.20.412 any more while the newer 
versions like 1.30.1 can play all of them.

So we are really stuck with this problem, it should be just a simple problem 
but since 1.21 it seems never solved. Now without subtitle, I have to swithc to 
other servers.

You may try add "-nofontconfig" under "Mencoder/Custom options".
