mockups exist here but need to be ratified by the UX group yet
backend work for this is anticipated to be done for b63 as part of the work needed for the floating charts for the standalone map. this ticket depends on that work being done. i believe this is for web-eda, but made it here bc it needs costing first @dmfalke
we might consider removing the settings that are specific to gradient colormaps in vizs that dont support them. in those vizs we might offer only the choice of categorical vs ordinal. that is a ux question @danicahelb
