Proton causing a kernel panic when under heavy load #5239

Proton version: experimental Games: (for example) Risk of Rain 2 & DOOM 2016

Hello! It has appeared to me that which ever proton version I use it won't utilise most of my hardware components properly and will at some point freeze my entire system resulting in a kernel panic. This is applicable to any version of Proton (custom versions included) and any somewhat modern games requiring OpenGL or Vulkan.

Hello @Magolor44, please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report. Also, if possible, please share specific details on the kernel panic.

In general, if this is a kernel panic in a GPU driver, then the video driver vendor would need to take a look and go from there.

I couldn't find the reason for the kernel panic sadly, but here is the gist link: https://gist.github.com/Magolor44/d6eb6a9a2e375c051f94ac97fe5cb3a1

Is similar to this Nvidia bug?

Magolor44 commented 3 years ago

Yeah that seems to be it.

Using the PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 start option seems to stabilise pretty much every game and prevent most crashes.
