I've updated Vagrant, allowed my terminal full access, allowed full access on all permissions in the directory, destroyed and built vagrant several times, and used sudo commands -- however, I keep reaching this permissions error. Any ideas? I appreciate the help. I am running on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.3 and Vagrant 2.2.9.

tomjn commented 4 years ago

Do their hosts have entries in the hosts file? When you say they can't be reached can you be more specific?

But are they listed in the /etc/hosts file? If they're not listed then the browset/OS won't know where to go to reach them.

Can you share the part of the provisioning that has goodhosts? It's super difficult to debug this without knowing what happened in the output :( Likewise are you sure that site hasn't had skip_provisioning : true set?

micatonge commented 4 years ago

I believe they are in the file! I can double check skip_provisioning

the part of provisioning with goodhosts

tomjn commented 4 years ago

The goodhosts issue is not resolved.

I personally don’t know how to help here other than suggesting you use goodhosts OR hostsupdater but not both. You currently have both installed.

tomjn commented 4 years ago

@Mte90 I believe we're reaching the limits of what VVV specific debugging can achieve, what we have now is a vagrant-goodhosts issue

@micatonge I have a very strong suspicion your problem is that you have both hostsupdater and goodhosts installed at the same time and both are running. Something odd is going on with your hosts file, perhaps there's an invalid entry, perhaps there are entries that were not removed that were meant to be removed

micatonge commented 4 years ago

I ran vagrant plugin list and I only see hostupdater

micatonge@Micas-MBP vvv % vagrant plugin list
vagrant-hostsupdater (1.1.1.160, global)
  - Version Constraint: > 0
micatonge@Micas-MBP vvv %

should I uninstall this plug in to install goodhosts?

tomjn commented 4 years ago

I'd uninstall hostsupdater, unless you need it for another non-VVV vagrant project there's no reason to keep it

micatonge commented 4 years ago

The following is my current log with only good hosts as the plugin and I'm still not sure why I have a good hosts issue since the hosts file looks normal. Either way I appreciate the help over the past two weeks!

Those hosts entries appear to be from hostsupdater not goodhost. When goodhosts adds the hosts they're all on a single line. Hostsupdater adds a comment with a hash.

However, if the sites you're trying to access all have entries in your hosts file, then that does not explain your reported issue. If sites that aren't vvv.test don't work, can you be more specific about why they don't work? 404? 500? Access denied? Timeout? DNS look up fail?

tomjn commented 4 years ago

As an aside do you have any additional network adapters aside from wifi/ethernet/virtualbox/bluetooth? E.g. a VPN or something another piece of software has provided?

micatonge commented 4 years ago

Is there any way to reset the hosts file? The sites that arent vvv.test return a HTTP ERROR 404. & nope! this is the current response I get from site-uconnectlabs.test

Those are the headers sent, can I see what the server responded with? A 404 means your browser reached the VM, what kind of 404? Is it a wordpress 404? Nginx 404? Or something else?

The sites that arent vvv.test return a HTTP ERROR 404.

& nope!

this is the current response I get from site-uconnectlabs.test

Also can you share your config.yml that you're using to provision the sites? Are these standard custom site template sites or something else?

Is there any way to reset the hosts file?

It's just a text file, you can remove entries by just deleting the line in an editor and saving, but I'd keep it there for now as I don't believe the hosts file is related to your current 404 issue. If it were, your browser wouldn't be giving a HTTP response as it wouldn't be able to make a connection

No webpage is found. Is this what you mean by response?

I think that is the case to open a new ticket because it is very confusing. As now, it isn't clear for me:

tomjn commented 4 years ago

@micatonge I notice your uconnectlabs.test: does not specify a repo field, how is it provisioning? Did you manually create the provisioner and nginx config?

What about the sites that do have this set such as one.wordpress.test?

I think that is the case to open a new ticket because it is very confusing.

@tomjn The only command I ran for provisioning was vagrant up --provision. I didn't manually create it. The sites one.wordpress.test & two.wordpress.test both work correctly.

Screen Shot 2020-08-10 at 8 31 19 AM

Is there a way to fix the CLI?

tomjn commented 4 years ago

I think there's been a misunderstanding.

In order to provision a site, VVV uses a provision/vvv-nginx.conf file for Nginx, and a provision/vvv-init.sh to do the initial setup of installing the database etc, and normally it gets that by cloning the custom site template, which has all the files needed to set up the site:

  wordpress-two:
....
    repo: https://github.com/Varying-Vagrant-Vagrants/custom-site-template.git
....

But your uconnectlabs.test: site does not have this, it's missing. When you first created that site, how did you set it up? It must have been working at some point as you said these aren't new sites, but sites that used to work but no longer work.

Normally when there is no repo field it's because those files were set up manually, which means you set them up yourself by hand. Are there provisioners? Is the nginx file missing? What does it contain?

micatonge commented 4 years ago

Oh I am just trying to launch these sites to be able to edit them, I am helping uConnect and I need to successfully be able to view these websites. However, I've gotten permission issues now host issues. I don't know how they set it up, but I can ask!

I found a file called provision.sh in /Users/micatonge/Desktop/uConnect/vvv/provision/provision.sh

```sh #!/usr/bin/env bash . Sorry if I don't understand my file vvv completely! I really appreciate the help!
@micatonge that's the global VVV main provisioner, I mean inside your site. They all have provision subfolders. For debugging individual sites we'll never ask you to look in the VVV root provision folder, but the sites individual folders.
E.g. for my wordpress-one site: www/wordpress-one/provision/provision.sh and the Ngnx config would be in that folder too. What does your uconnect site have? What does the uconnect folder in www look lke?
micatonge commented 4 years ago
Seems like I do have those files!
# 1. server_name - Change the server_name parameter in the server
# 2. root        - Change root to the full path that your WordPress
And there are files present in htdocs? It's very unusual, if VVV is asked to serve a site that does not exist it's meant to show the dashboard but with a red warning label indicating something went wrong. An empty 404 is completely unexpected.
QQ: What happens if you try to load the site at its root, no wp-admin? What if you try to load the readme.html? What's going on with ngrok?
micatonge commented 4 years ago
There are files! The sites still say 404 :/
So it is indeed serving files from that site.
Can you put a test.php in the main folder alongside WP on that site and put <?php phpinfo(); in it, does that load in the browser?
Also, minions runner? hehe
Turns out it was a database problem and it wasn't mapping correctly. I really appreciate all the kind help over the weeks! It works now! Thank you :)
tomjn commented 4 years ago
Glad to hear it's resolved! I've never heard of a database issue generating blank 404 responses though, what caused it?
Mte90 commented 4 years ago
So we can close it?
tomjn commented 4 years ago
Yes we can close it, but I still want to know what the cause of the last issue was
micatonge commented 4 years ago
I had a problem with wp_domain_mapping in the staging.sql, so I deleted it in phpMyAdmin and ran upvagrant up --provision and it works fine now. I think as I was building and rebuilding vagrant, that part of the database got confused since it would assume the database is there already.
Ah so you're usiing the WP Domain mapping plugin? In the future you might want to give mercator a go, but if each site is only used by a single URL then you don't need a domain mapping plugin. You can set a sites URL and home URL to whatever you want, it's only when a single site in a multisite needs to be served on multiple domains that a plugin is necessary.
