shapechange: (caretaker actually also protects the person it investigates but i see no reason to translate that)
I think RNG would have massive potential to just own the caretaker if literally all of their info goes to scum, is it a random good player or do you just have to cry if every single one goes to a scum? If it can go to scum, maybe making it weighted random or not letting it happen twice in a row or something would be good?
shapechange: with werewolves, we usually do arbitrary instead of random
shapechange: obviously in maf there's a much higher town ratio, but in wwr there's much more info and ways to disprove what someone's saying - i think it balances out
shapechange: and, like i said - arbitrary
any ideas on the new name
Fisherman (coming 2026!)
shapechange: what about, say, judge
shapechange: jk
shapechange: idk
captainluffy: btw i think u forgot to tag this one
I mean, caretaker is a fine name if you aren't afraid of just copying.
mrrfiish: oh this is where the channel is, i couldnt find it so i was just gitting my hub
captainluffy: didnt know you had a github

what if we do something similar to PP, so you have a list of players (1/3 most likely) and it's chosen from that list, once everyone on the list is dead you can no longer invest, but it also has at least 1 of each team member on it?
shapechange: that seems a bit overcomplicated
e_thsn: I was thinking it would make it slightly easier to deduce who got the result but add a downside
e_thsn: there's possibly other ways to do that though
I actually do really like ethans idea there.
mctsts: i hat randomness

this is a classic wwr role overengineering suggestion
shapechange: suggestion: instead of going to an arbitrary player, the info goes to a random cit
i like this idea bc it makes the game more engaging for cits and it prompts more public discussion
mctsts: This is much better but does have the issue that it encourages us to use more citizen than we otherwise might
mctsts: Maybe random tm?
shapechange: yeah maybe
venomousbirds: random tm could work
venomousbirds: i can see how this might be an easy way to prove people tho
venomousbirds: but it can definitely be faked early game too
e_thsn: Random TM/WM that way you can't guarantee a townsfolk got it maybe
e_thsn: Where we at on this <@458727748504911884>
shapechange: i am swamped with work rn but i think we're on a viable path with it

want me to make a mock role desc?
shapechange: i can do it dw
e_thsn: cool
shapechange: [Placeholder] | Townsfolk Investigative Basics Each night, the [Placeholder] may investigate one player. The result will be sent to another player. shapechange: i did one for FT style and AT style. i think i actually prefer AT style

what about calling it mind reader?
shapechange: that makes no sense and also sucks
mrrfiish: fisherman (coming 2026!)
mrrfiish: <@458727748504911884> cat lady
mrrfiish: TRUST
mrrfiish: cats wander and stuff... if theyre an outdoor cat...
mrrfiish: and its a towny name
shapechange: kind of real actually
mrrfiish: i think it works 🐟
shapechange: i like it but it is a little informal
shapechange: i think something that draws on themes of gossip and/or 'poison pen' letter writers could work
shapechange: or we could just reuse Bard or smth
e_thsn: What about maybe something to do with spies?
shapechange: doesn't really fit with a lot of our role name theming
shapechange: okay forgive me for basing this on a mafia role but it's a really interesting one. it's called "caretaker" and it investigates a player each night (probs FT style for us but could be AT style), but it doesn't learn the results - someone random does. i.e i could investigate ts the direwolf, and vera could get told "caretaker investigated ts and saw him as direwolf", but I wouldn't know the investigation result or who got it. anyway i think it's cool
