This can already be done with paths built into a room and a trail shader, and some an open source path base collision system. Though a native addition to gml would be quite nice, this may be more possible to do with the upcoming IDE mods.

Feature Type: feat_addition_ingame Description: It would be a super addition to GMS if users are able to define a boundary in room editor and assign an image as texture, and GM fills the area inside seamlessly with that texture. Right now it isnt a very easy task to create a good-looking terrain in GMS 2. Contrarily many engines have very good approaches to make stunning terrains.(Like Ferr2d tool for Unity) Benefit: I am a fan of platformer games and all my games have been in this category. a simple way to add beautiful and "smart" terrains to levels would be more than necessary for any 2d platformer game.
