Just dropping an idea here: If one wants to use the map as a means of navigation, it might be helpful to keep it open and in foreground while reading other texts. An ideal setup would be a preconfigured window arrangement which keeps the map always occuping 1/3 or 1/2 of the viewport width and the other windows cascading on the rest of the screen. Here's what I would imagine:
A more generic alternative would be to add a "pin window" option to manually fix the position and size of one or more windows.
