I have written up some code which will hopefully address my request from #128. Caveat: I haven't been able to run this code to test it. I tried using setup.py to install the changes locally, but ran into a series of issues. Since this is a very small change, I'm hoping it won't be tough for a maintainer to try out before approving the request.
