Quick candidate "fix" for #428 so you can decide whether you like it or if it's too obtrusive/ noisy.

This should also increase the visibility of the issue in case anybody encounters it again

this is looking pretty good, i'll hit merge when back on my main computer in an hour or two unless you have other things you still wanna add.
