The CHIP is my favorite, but isn't available to purchase in large quantities. Same goes for the RPi Zero.
The Orange Pi is the only one really available and is $10 per part, but closer to $25 with an SD card, power and shipping. Comparably, the RPi is around $45 per part considering power and SD card.
Can we PXE boot RPis?
We have a couple of power strips that we will bring. For the CHIP, "Estimated Shipping November 2016." sounds risky.
Personally, the idea of "tinkering" rather than buying something more ready-made is appealing, but not if it's likely to significantly increase the time it would likely take to get this off the ground.
