Should I just save all data in XML, or make special, more optimal format for it?

Optimal format for better and faster auto-saving mechanics?

Also there is should be current work progress, with all stages and flags, for 
painless and correct work resuming.

In plain text files can become even ~100-200mb with full data about every 
picture...

Used my own format (just saving RAW data and pack it via basic zLib algorithm). 
Too hard to make it auto-save compatible, made a basic save/load ability.
