Search returns inconsistent results

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Search I put in the word "homeless" and got a bunch of basketball links.
What???  Tried again: "animals": don't understand irrelevant search
results, but on page 2 is some kind of PETA link that didn't work. How do
you rank Causes? 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version beta - OS Windows (type unknown) IE (version unknown)

Add "your search returned X results" to search results page - just so you know 
how
much you have to go through, or that you should refine your search

7) Search Functions:

The site should be smooth in the way it moves and is interactive. Right now, 
it’s
pretty clunky. For instance, on the “Search” page, clicking on the advanced 
search
tag stalls for a second then shifts the scrollbar and changes what we see. This
shouldn’t happen. Also, the line surrounding the expanded options area and 
the box
for “Only in the category(s):” both extend to the right even past the white
background. This is an obvious glitch.

I did a search for Obama, and got no results, though I got 3 for McCain. 
Results were
slow coming, though that may just be the speed of the overall site. Clicking on
results, it is unclear what I will find. Will it be an article, text, video, an
image? Results should be clearer and perhaps provide a picture besides the tiny 
words
“media” or “blog entry.”

The entire site (on beta) has not been indexed; would resolve after data is 
migrated
from the old site.
