replaces =m with =n in .config by setting BUILD_BASE_ONLY to "Yes" reduces build time to ~ 1hr and reduces opportunities for problems

Could you please add guidelines on how to build the SDK ?

You mean compiling the openwrt SDK? Configure the image before building it http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/build#make.menuconfig and double check the SDK is selected http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/obtain.firmware.sdk#create.one
