Connected Teen Tech #39

Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

Creating community driven after-hours programming opportunities for AISD students ages 13-18 to prepare for the Austin workforce.

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

Austin is an incredibly tech-centric city. Most positions require either a bachelors and/or experience. By forming partnerships with local web, app, and computer programming companies, we are able to foster relationships to help students have an alternative to college. With the cost prohibitions of college, many students do not see it as a option. By prioritizing interactions with at-risk youth, Connected Teen Tech will develop easy to learn environments.

Who will benefit from your project? Describe the humans at the center of the problem - who are they?

Any student who is currently enrolled in Middle or High School in the Greater Austin Area will be able to apply to become a participant. Focus will be on at-risk students who are interested in becoming part of the Austin workforce.

Issue area(s) relevant to your project idea:

Currently working on a prototype that will be open source. Since the project is based both online and offline, it will need more input from community leaders as well as industry leaders. I am currently creating the prototype, but would need more of a team to help accomplish this goal.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a web developer by trade. I dropped out of high school to get my GED when I was 16. Since then I have become a self-taught web developer and have expanded my skills from simple web sites to full blow web applications.

As someone who did not go to school for this field, I fully understand the limitations of not having a degree. I believe that helping at-risk students develop portfolios before entering the workforce is beneficial for not only the students self-worth, but also for building a strong workforce in Austin.
