youtube-upload can't log in when using 2 factor auth

I try to log in with my correct username and password and authentication fails:
Login to Youtube API: email='jt.doppleganger@gmail.com', 
password='*************************'
[BadAuthentication] Authentication failed

After disabling 2 factor authentication on my account, the upload works fine.

You can create an application specific password on google and use that. I use 
2fa and did this and it works fine. This page details how:-
