This algorithm is dominated by the most active thread (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. level comments in that thread all outrank the 1st level post in the next most active thread), and I don't think we want that. Should we show only the highest ranked comment in any given thread (that is, taboo children of a post higher in the list)?

The notion of a thread in the database basically doesn't exist, so I'm not sure how we would do that - we could just limit the search to only top level comments, but I'm pretty sure the current behaviour is superior to that.

If this is still on a separate page, could it be promoted to the home page for logged-in users?

Create a new page to see comments sorted by interestingness (candidate formula - karma on comment + .5 karma on all descendants). Only shows things since last visit to page, with (12 hour?) grace period.
Precursor to dashboard.
