I have this same problem on Linux:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100214 Linux Mint/8
(Helena) Firefox/3.5.8
Gears version 0.5.32.0
Google Calendar offline works without problems. Google Docs returns the error
as
described by the OP. The "Install offline access for Google Docs" popup
appears,
press "enable offline access", then the popup disappears and the error is
displayed
at the top of the Google Docs page.

Same problem here as well. I have used Firfox and Chrome on a Windows 7 and a
Windows
XP machine with the same results. I have no problem working offline with the
Google
Calendar, just won't work with docs.

It magically began to work just now. As I didn't change anything to my
configuration,
it must be the Google docs guys who fixed something...

Hmmm. not quite, after all... When I activate the offline mode it seems to work
ok,
but when I go offline I can't see any document in any of the folders. I have to
get
back online and refresh to see them...
