Maintenance update #202

The changes include general maintenance things like upgrading our dependencies and fixing things that prevented the application from starting.

Since you switched the installation method to pipenv, I think it would be good to add a sentence or a link to the README to mention that it is used and explain how it can be installed.

@timonegk I have rebase the changes unto current master to take into account #206. If you could reapprove, that would be great
