Blokada blocking phone from Downloading security updates through Mobile Data, But works fine on Wi-Fi #378

This might possibly be a OEM specific issue and thus cannot prove 100% reproducibility in every device.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the settings app
  2. Go the the security sections -> Updates
  3. Attempting to download the update fails unless I use WiFi or turn off Blokada.

Expected behaviour

Blokada does not interfere with the download of the security update regardless of the network I'm connected to.

Actual behaviour

Blokada blocks the download of Security updates

Configuration

  1. Blokada version - 3.7

  2. Device model - Nokia 6.1 Plus/TA-1083

  3. Android version / ROM - Android 9.0 Pie/April security patch

Questions

  1. How long have you been using Blokada? About a year.

  2. How long time ago has the problem started to happen? I've noticed it just today.

  3. How often does this problem happen to you? Everytime I download a security update.

On which phone did you experience it? Blokada doesn't distinguish between mobile and wifi from this point of view, thus if the DNS servers are available and they don't block the access, you should be able to download content.

I'm able to reproduce this on my Nokia 6.1 Plus. My Dad's secondary phone a Samsung J6 was able to download updates on Mobile data but not mine. I use cloudfare DNS on blokada.

Can confirm that this happens on Moto x4 too when downloading Motorola security updates, whilst being on WiFi.

Are we sure Blokada restrict it? Isn't there a set size limit what the phone doesn't start to download on mobile? Like when you try to download a 100+ MB app from the Play Store, it will notify you you are on mobile. Did you try to download security updates when Blokada was off? As I said, Blokada doesn't distinguish between wifi and mobile from this point of view.

It let's me download the security updates when I disable Blokada on my phone.

Can confirm, happened on my Pixel 2 with latest April update.

@rpeter95 I am very sure that blokada is blocking downloads. I use mobile data to download SP when im not able to do so on Wi-Fi. I do not have a system set limit on downloading of data. Yes, The system notifies me of higher data charges but lets me download the SP just fine if i turn off blokada. WiFi though works with Blokada on.

I think this may be solved with the VPN feature activated. I'm not sure if there's a solution with the "fake vpn" adblocking-only approach, since we've been experiencing various types of system downloads being blocked, since the very beginning. More input would be useful here..

Can this be due to a host file being blocked? My phone connects to storage.googleapis.com to download the update. But that doesn't really make sense as to why the download goes through when on WiFi.
