High CPU usage since today [urgent] #19125

Description

Since today, Brave is using a full CPU core constantly. My CPU fan keeps spinning my ears off and the system probably eats tons of electricity.

Also, Brave cannot be quit properly. The main process keeps spinning around the CPU and never closes. I have to kill it to close Brave. Next time I start it, I can restore the session.

I've closed all tabs now but the issues doesn't go away. It's really frustrating to use this browser now.

The internal task manager (Shift+Esc) doesn't show anything I could use. The browser is around 100% and the entries from the second line on change permanently, with just a few % CPU usage. No single culprit to be found here. Must be the browser itself. A bad update?

I tried to find out how to launch this browser in safe mode but no such thing exists in Brave so I can't test any further.

Not only the desktop version, the mobile version also has this issue. At least on Android.

Can confirm this happens here, too. Started ~1h ago. Brave V1.31.88 on Linux Mint 19.3

Process "Brave --enable-crashpad" uses 100% CPU the second the browser is launched. I deleted the entire Brave profile in /config/ .. no change. I restored a Timeshift backup from 3 days ago when Brave was still working .. same issue.

Must be some experiment or flag Brave pushed to us .. please fix urgently.

Just started having this problem after updating the browser on Windows 7 x64

CPU usage 100% on 1 core by the "Browser" process image

Also the browser process never ends upon quitting the browser, it keeps that process going and continues to use the CPU resources: image

It appears their servers are down. Apparently when the servers are down the applications stop working. What a huge design flaw.

No issue here on Android, but it probably cannot be seen anyway. Using the browser is possible on Windows and Android. Closing is impossible on Windows and does not apply to Android. If Brave is not in the foreground on Android, I see no high CPU usage but have no proper tools to inspect that (just CPU-Z, can't find any built-in Android developer tools now).

And just as suddenly everything is fine again. Weird. Hey Brave devs, if this really was a server issue please make sure the Browser doesn't go bananas just because your servers had an issue ...

The high CPU load and close problem disappeared for me around the time when the first comment here that said it worked again.

Rewards disabled. Additional ad blocker is uBlock origin with default lists and a handful of additional rules.

There is also this full-screen window overshooting problem on Linux that hasn't yet been even looked at. The issue lies there getting absolutely no attention. I'm moving to Vivaldi.

FTR, I tried everything from reinstalling to installing Beta & Nightly too. Same problem.

Same problem. Guess you're talking about issue #19038.

@awslabspl Do you have the same problem on iOS and Android? Can you please also share if you have anything in ~/Library/Application Support/BraveSoftware/BraveBrowser/Crashpad? What exactly happens when you launch the browser?

I'm also seeing this on the latest version of x64 Brave on Win 7 Pro and i5 with 8GB. At least the Greaselion errors that hanged the browser and entire system, has ceased. But start up still hiccups with high CPU load and RAM load. Then settles back down to expected normal behavior.

Note: This is not happening to a freshly installed Win10 Pro H0H2 on an i3 laptop. Fresh install of Brave, with latest updates. No startup problems, no unusual system loads and behavior.

FYI since it is possibly related to some reports. If you had the "experimental native wallet" flag turned on in chrome://flags or using 1.32.x (Beta or Nightly) then there was a problem that was just fixed with private windows causing high CPU: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/18961 The fix will be out in a couple days for those platforms.

I have a 6 cores/12 threads CPU and Brave Nightly is taking 45% CPU usage with a single tab opened on Ubuntu 20.04

I have the same issue happening to me on Windows. One core is constantly at >90% usage with the Browser process using >100 CPU. Rewards are disabled and I have no custom adblocker rules as I use uBlock.

Same issue here: 6 core i5-9400 on Win 10 (19042.1288) with Brave process using 100% of one core and does not close when closing the app. Able to use the browser, though it is sluggish. I don't understand how this is not fixed yet

@JHart56474 The way this resolved it self 7 days ago for me was without any changes, it just suddenly "worked" again and did not happen again since.

So it seems to be related to something being "available" or not, just like @THETCR suggested....

Can you analyze the browser network traffic or it's DNS queries (looking for possible failures)?

Can also confirm this issue with Brave Version 1.31.88 Chromium: 95.0.4638.69 (Official Build) (64-bit) on MX Linux 21. This happened between roughly 11PM EST to 12PM EST on 11/07/2021. After midnight/morning of 11/08/2021 I was then able to run Brave without using massive CPU usage and an inability to properly close or reopen the app without killing the process.

This is also happening to me on Arch Linux. It is currently happening right now and has been happening for the past 30 minutes. I am unable to close brave and stop the high cpu usage without killing it in htop. One core is stuck at 100% usage.

Same issue, lasted about 30 minutes and magically cleared up on its own, as other's have stated.. That's spooky. I wonder if Brave is up to some trickery?

Also confirmed. Brave Browser Nightly has a very high CPU usage and significantly heating my MacBook Pro since few days ago.

Version 1.33.65 Chromium: 96.0.4664.35 (Official Build) nightly (x86_64) OS: macOS Monterey - MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

For now, I'm not using Brave, but another browser to avoid battery draining.

Yes. Every restart of the brave browser x64 on the Win7Pro system. Note: The entire browser seems slow as compared to other lesser systems. Used to be my fastest browser (faster than Vivaldi and Firefox) the reason for me to switch from Firefox/Waterfox. But now it lags behind Firefox on this system. With video and audio playback interruptions, USB HID glitches, WiFi slow downs. I suspect a bug is affecting the multithreading of the system and it seems to behave as a single-threaded system. RAM usage ramps much more than on other Brave installed systems that exhibit no such anomaly.

The latest Brave Browser also does not have any of these CPU/resources issues on a fresh install of Peppermint Linux 10 64-bit.

All Brave Browser installs are Sync-ed to use identical extensions, settings and themes. None use Brave wallet.

I also had this issue (on Debian Testing, brave-browser 1.31.88 atop chromium 95.0.4638.69 official 64-bit, zero tabs open on a fresh browser restart). I had to kill the browser, avoid restoring the session, and then let it sit for a while. I did this at least three times, the last of which I did gracefully overnight:

Tell Brave to Exit, then find its PID (the process consuming all of your CPU, which you can find with top), then run sleep 500; kill -HUP $PID; sleep 1500; kill -HUP $PID; sleep 500; kill $PID; sleep 500; kill -HUP $PID; sleep 1500; kill -9 $PID.

I chose those times arbitrarily. I've lost the terminal log, but it ended with some errors, meaning the final 2+ kills (I want to say three) were unnecessary. That suggests brave (slowly but) gracefully closed itself with the hangup (HUP) signals.

That may or may not have solved the issue, but when I launched brave the next day, it behaved again.

I have a 6 cores/12 threads CPU and Brave Nightly is taking 45% CPU usage with a single tab opened on Ubuntu 20.04

High CPU usage in my case happened on private windows, it was fixed in Brave Nightly 1.33.72.

Just updated to Brave Version 1.31.91 Chromium: 95.0.4638.69 (Official Build) (64-bit) OS: Win 7 Pro System: Dell Inspiron i5 2xxx mobile, 8GB 250 GB SSD

No improvements. Start up with CPU load 40-60%, then hangs unresponsive for ~2 minutes, consumes 2x the normal amount of RAM, with 2 Brave instances of 1GB+. After it recovers from hang, high CPU load continues for 5 minutes while the browser operable. This is for just one open tab. Everything operates slow, data transfer rates, multiple downloads, multiple open tabs, etc. It's been too long, over a month? Getting tired of this ongoing issue.

I gave up hope after updating to Version 1.32.106 Chromium: 96.0.4664.45 (Official Build) (64-bit).....as there was no fix to the previously stated problems. So, I uninstalled Brave x64, and manually stripped all instances of Brave from my registry, and deleted all zombied files and directories. Since I have my settings Synced, I surmised I won't lose my customizations. A fresh install restored my PC to normal operation. No more CPU and RAM runaway conditions, and all the hardware and OS operations are snappy again. The 2 instances of Brave.exe consuming 1+GB of RAM no longer exist. But....Brave Sync seems to be buggy as it failed to sync all my extensions, and themes...only bookmarks. Didn't have any problem syncing before with both Linux and Windows systems. Possibly a bug when Brave Sync assigns a name for the Synced system but the name is the same as the previous instance uninstalled. It listed two system of the same name. Deleting the older name didn't correct the Sync issue. Just an FYI to anyone planning to take the same route.

Originally, this problem was related to Daylight Savings Time change: on 31st Oct in Europe and on 7th Nov in the USA. Browser hangs are not related to any backend servies, it was a pure bug in the client side code that made the browser unresponsive on startup during the "extra" hour. This problem can be reproduced by, for example, changing system timezone to any american one and changing system clock to 11:01pm. This problem is fixed now. All other issues related to High CPU usage should be reported as new tickets.

The Brave Browser should not be this closely coupled to any servers as a client focused app. If the browser does not work when remote servers it does not try to connect to at user request are offline, that is a design flaw.
