Location: Pilani, Rajasthan
Audience: Prospective Students (who know or would like to know some BITSian jargons related to eating locations), New Admissions at BITS Pilani (who are exposed to BITSian jargon in their first few days but end up being clueless!), Parents of current and prospective students, and any other food lover knowing BITSian jargon.
Purpose: Pilani is a relatively lesser-known town in Rajasthan. Among engineering students and their parents, Pilani is well known for mainly being the home to BITS Pilani. Personally, I have spent 5 wonderful years at BITS Pilani, filled with fun memories and anecdotes. A common issue that I see parents and students mildly stressing before coming to the campus (and the initial few days on campus as well) is the availability of reasonable food outside the mess halls. (Honestly, mess food is terrible at Pilani, atleast it was during my time). Another common observation that I have made is that during initial days is that new students are flustered with the BITSian jargon for eating locations whenever seniors invite them to a particular meet-and-greet locations (mainly restaurants and snacks joints). This map not only helps assuage fears in the first case, but also helps new students immensely. Moreover, for a food lover, this gives various options to them to explore in their "relatively calm phase" of their college life before they find themselves stuck in a sea of assignments, quizzes, exams and deadlines!
Mental Model Sketch: Tried my best to get a rougly accurate sketch. This is the best iteration:
Relevant Aspects from Google Maps: Chose Google Maps instead of OSM just maintaining uniformity between the demo session and my work.
Abstraction: Grids & geometric shapes: Chose a simple grid with horizontal and vertical lines at 90 degrees, because being physically present on the ground, the roads and their gradual twists and turns wherever applicable, felt linear most of the times. The sharp ones could be easily modelled with this simple grid.
Grid:
Final Schematic Map:
Here, I have used the grid, dropped some less important landmarks (buildings, sports grounds and gardens/parks), etc from the mental model {Simplification vs Minimal} .For "Elements of the city", here I have included the major landmarks which we BITSians used to refer to when guiding others to a particular spot. I have also included a water body outside the campus which was also an important indicator of location most of the times for us. The thickness of the roads is an indicator of the width and also the traffic on the same (tried to use visual hierarchy here, hopefully was successful to some extent!) .
Finally, I have included a legend indicating the various icons.

I've been in Delhi for seven years, but I haven't toured much of it. Most outings to tourists spots only happen when friends and family are visiting. I wanted to create something I myself could use as a guide. Delhi is like a massive archaeological site. Like annotated layers of soil at an excavation site, you can still find glimpses of even the oldest settlements in Delhi. I wanted to create something that conveys this feeling, and something which heritage walkers, tourists and amateur historians could use.
Some maps and sketches that I had hanging in my living room, and some maps of Delhi from the books of William Dalrymple and Rana Safvi.
These pictures helped me get a sense of the colour scheme and iconography of classic maps.
I started by sketching on a map of Delhi the landmarks, and their chronological order - I wanted to ensure that the user gets a sense of history as they progress from one point to another. Unfortunately there's only so much a schematic map can contain (and I confess that I did end up adding far too much text for my liking). Also important was to convey a sense of efficiency in commuting to all the landmarks I had considered. Visiting them all, and doing them justice would take days, but I nevertheless wanted to convey that a single-day-long tour of them is possible (albeit far less rewarding than taking your time).
Now that I had a clear idea of the content, I needed to pin down the landmarks correctly - these included the historical sites, metro stations and a river. Getting their relative positions was crucial in order to ensure a somewhat truthful (if not accurate or to scale) schematic map. For this I used some basic mapmaking libraries to create the following map,
which I could use as a guide to draw the map by hand.
And here's the result:
Name: Nino Leenus Roll No: 21f1001786
Location: Paravur, Kollam , Kerala
Audience: People who are planning to visit major landmarks in Paravur, Kerala.
Purpose: Paravur is a beautiful place with a combination of Sea, Lakes, Rivers, Backwaters, and vast green fields. Attracting a number of travelers this a place for a days trip. There are some popular temples too. The schematic map is given for travelers to get an idea on route map of Paravur . People usually arrive by train or bus.

Name: Devjyoti Chakrabarti Roll Number: 21f1006240
Location: Chittaranjan Park, New Delhi
Scale, Audience & Purpose For the schematic map, I choose the location of Chittaranjan Park in New Delhi. CR Park is particularly known for its Bengali cuisine and has a reputation for being one of the best places to eat in Delhi. Additionally, being located just near the Greater Kailash metro station on the Magenta Line, it is an easy-to-reach location. My schematic map showing the different marketplaces of CR Park is aimed at anyone coming to this area for exploring its culture.
Mental model sketch Having been born and brought up here, I had a good idea of where all the markets are and how the different roads leading to these markets were corrected. A preliminary mental model sketch resulted in the below figure.
Tracing relevant aspects from OSM On looking at the location from OSM, I quickly realised that it's a rather large area that my map would be trying to depict. So it became imperative to make note of and clearly label the different roads, like the Bipinchandra Pal Marg and Kali Mandir Marg.
Elements of the city I then moved on to using the web application of Figma in trying to display this area. I went ahead and simplified the picture obtained from OSM, removing any parks, internal roads and houses that I thought weren’t necessary for the overall purpose of my schematic map.
As can be seen, after getting off at the Greater Kailash metro station, Road 1 can be taken which links up to Market Number 3. From there the Bipinchandra Pal Marg is a straight road which passes through Markets 1 and 2 on the way. On the four-way at Market 1, on one end is a sweets shop and other miscellaneous shops while on the other end is the Kali Mandir marg. On this road, there is the Shiv Mandir and Market Number 4.

Final Schematic Map
Simplification Vs Minimal The schematic representation of the IIT Campus has been designed to prioritize clarity and ease of use for visitors. By removing extraneous details and simplifying the layout of the paths, visitors should be able to easily navigate the campus and locate the areas of interest.
Although it may be disappointing for some visitors that certain places have not been represented in the schematic, it's important to remember that the primary purpose of the map is to provide a functional guide for visitors. Including too much detail can create confusion and overwhelm, making it difficult for visitors to find what they're looking for.
Overall, the design of the schematic is a thoughtful compromise between providing enough information for visitors to navigate the campus while also maintaining a clean and uncluttered design.

Scale, Audience and Purpose This is a map of an area called Dhantoli in Nagpur which is particularly famous for a large variety of computer/laptop/mobile sellers and service centres.
This is a place which I really like and have been buying my computer equipment for almost 7-8 years now. This map is particularly helpful to those who want to make their own PCs, buy laptops, spare parts, get advice on computers, buy software etc.
This will help as a guide to the above audience to reach relevant shops easily.
Mental Model Sketch
Tracing Relevant Aspect from A Map I traced those roads and structures which I feel are relevant in reaching the shops which I feel are up to the mark in providing their service, which I have personally tried or visited.
Abstraction I performed grid abstraction on the above image to get a more organized structure of the roads and accompanying structures.
Simplification I simplified the map by rotating it and removing the unnecessary roads/paths which do not lead to any relevant shop. Also, I further simplified the canal to look identifiable and simple at the same time.
Adding Visual Hierarchy to the Map I added different colours to differentiate between more important/main roads and the gullys. I also gave them different widths to further enhance visual hierarchy.
Adding Location Marks, Icons, Typography I added relevant icons and colours to the map. I went for a lighter colour for the background an a darker colour for the roads so that they look more important to the viewer. I also added small aesthetic elements to the park and canal for better emphasis.
I also went for bolder texts and a colourful icon background to further differentiate the various places on the basis of their categories.
Final Schematic Map
Edit : I added the city name Nagpur below Dhantoli for anyone who just sees the map and doesn't realize where this place is
Name: Roy John Roll Number: 21f1007054 Location: Technopark, Trivandrum
Audience: New Employees and visitors of Technopark Trivandrum Purpose: The purpose of a schematic map of Technopark Trivandrum would be to help new employees and visitors navigate the park and find the amenities and buildings they need. This could include information on the location of different companies, restaurants, parking areas etc. within the park. By providing a clear and user-friendly visual representation of the park, a schematic map can help new users quickly orient themselves and find the information they need to be productive and comfortable in their new environment.
Created a rough sketch of the map, keeping in mind the layout of Technopark and the locations of various amenities.
Used OpenStreetMap to trace the boundaries of Technopark and the major roads and landmarks in and around the park. Abstraction is done by using colors or shades to differentiate between different types of buildings or amenities.

Hyderabad was the summer capital of my childhood. And visits to Hussain Sagar, a heart shaped lake, were almost a ritual every year. Hussain Sagar was built across a tributary of the Musi river in 1563 by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. The lake was named after Hussain Shah Wali, who was the Master of Architecture in the Kingdom. Hussain Sagar was the main source of water supply to Hyderabad before Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar were built on river Musi. It also separates the city centre of Hyderabad from its neighbourhood Secunderabad.
This schematic map is for any tourists, visitors, or locals at Hussain Sagar trying to figure out what to do. The map also lists a few other must-visit attractions in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, along with airports, railway stations, hospitals, restaurants (I like) and universities in case our audience is a university student (or their guardians) out for exploring the new city.
The aim is to create a schematic map that centres around the heartfelt Hussain Sagar, and all other places located with respect to the lake (which pretty much is in the centre of the city anyway).
Here's the mental model sketch:
Fun-fact: It was while tracing the OSM that I found out that Hussain Sagar is heart-shaped.
Traced the city on a larger scale to include more locations.
Made the lines straighter.
Now, the lines are both continuous and differentiable.
Marked a few locations with map pointers for later reference.
Abstraction with the geometric shape, made the plan more symmetrical.
Put map pointers on the abstract version as well.
Made it more aesthetic looking (I hope). The two shades were to symbolise the two cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad.
Added icons and labelled the places as wells as the roads.
Final version with added context, legend, compass, a title, and other minute details.
Thank You!
Scale: Patiala, a city in Punjab, India, is well-known for its shopping destinations. Patiala is particularly famous for its traditional Punjabi attire, such as the Patiala salwar and dupatta, as well as for its vibrant jewelry, handicrafts, and textiles. The city offers several bustling markets and modern shopping malls, making it a must-visit destination for shopaholics.
Audience: People visiting Patiala for the first time looking for places famous for shopping.
Purpose: Even though various marketplaces exist in the city, most tourists won't be able to find these hidden gems easily on the internet. The purpose of this illustration is to bridge this gap.
I have been living in Patiala for the past 2 years and in these two years of college life, I have explored almost all of Patiala. I made this map based on my knowledge of the city.
I went on Google Maps and traced the exact path.
I tried to create an abstraction by marking the exact spots of the markets.
Added important landmarks(Gurudwara Shri Dukh Niwaran Sahib which a very famous gurudwara and the bus stand of the city). Further, I tried to give reference to the main roads that connect the city to the rest of the state.
Thank you!
