I think this could be a great chance to consider adding a fancy wizard for new users. This wizard would be presented when a user just installs BuddyPress or can be triggered via a button in the BuddyPress Settings page. I imagine it going something like this..

Step 1 - Welcome to BuddyPress!

We’ve detected that your site is almost ready for building your community! All we need to do is update your permalinks.

Click here to update your permalinks! (ajax button)

Step 2 - What features would you like to start with?

BuddyPress has a wide set of social networking features you can choose from. We have selected the most common features but feel free to add or remove the features as you see fit!

| component list + features |

Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Don't worry, you can always enable and disable features by visiting the BuddyPress settings page.

Step 3: Pick the Perfect Design

Based on the type of community you would like to start you can choose a “Template Pack” that fits your needs. Template packs are used to create the BuddyPress page layouts and it features. Sounds confusing? Here’s a quick description of the available template packs.

Legacy: A perfect starting point for any social network. Used by thousands of site owners the legacy template pack is highly trustworthy and compatible with all the amazing BuddyPress plugins out there!

Modern: A cutting edge new set of layouts and features that are meant to take your community to the next level. With a strong focus on improved interactivity (live notifications and instant updates for your members) and several other cutting edge technologies this is a great solution for communities that focus heavily on real time communication. Note: This template pack might not be compatible just yet with all available plugins & themes.

Step 4: Enjoy your new community!

We are all done setting up your community. You probably can't wait to get started with your site, but if you would like to learn more about BuddyPress and it's possibilities here is some further reading!

I agree.

I think that it's generally more experienced people setting up a BP network, those familiar with the set up process. But, regardless, the UI of it all is a bit dated. I think that if you want to move BP to a top class level app, it needs to look that way from top to bottom, inside and out. The back end UI for BP could use a general overhaul and a Wizard might be a great place to start.

We tried and moved away from a set-up wizard years ago; there were too many clicks to get started.

In terms of picking the template pack, we went with a drop-down box in the Settings page for 2.9.
