Thanks for the recommendation, @chrisaldrich! I'll explore implementing it. Sounds like a good idea. Do you know of a good guide on integrating native support for microformats in WordPress? I'll take a look at the popular themes that support it already.
@cagrimmett the SemPress theme (and its children) is probably the best thorough extant example, but there are a few more in the links I gave you. The discuss link will put you into the indieweb chat (both general as well as a #dev channel) where you'll likely find the developers who built some of these things as well as help from microformats experts (there's even a #microformats channel for that). Most everyone there regularly is kind and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.
It's not actively supported presently (though still works in most cases), but the author of SemPress also wrote a WordPress plugin to inject microformats2, but there's only so much a plugin can do compared to doing it in a theme directly. You may find it somewhat useful for borrowing bits to dump into the theme as well: https://github.com/pfefferle/wordpress-uf2. If you look, you'll find that some portions of Sempress use pieces of it as well.)
It would be awesome if this theme had native support for microformats2 for better use with the indieweb wordpress plugins. A lot of people using micro.blog are using many of these plugins for things like webmentions which micro.blog supports.
