We have made some recent updates to the template to make it more online-event-friendly and more ideas are definitely welcome. We have an open issue on adding instructions: #668. That's a great place to give more feedback.
An orientation to breakout rooms could also be good, but it should be a separate pull request from the above if it's of interest.
Making two smaller pull requests makes it easier for maintainers to discuss proposed changes and get them incorporated to the material quickly. That way if one is a clear accept and the other part needs more improvements, the part that's ready to go can be shared right away.

I'm a member of The Carpentries staff and I'm submitting this issue on behalf of another member of the community. In most cases I won't be able to follow up or provide more details other that what I'm providing below.
I would love to contribute to the template workshop. I suggest having another generic version of the workshop template for online or remote workshops since they have been common in recent times. In this template we should have a place to provide for registration links to the video conferencing that will be used and instructions on how to set up the video conference platform. Also in between sessions, we should introduce the breakout rooms where the trainees can discuss what they have learned while the instructors visit each room to know how the trainees are going through the training.
