Get Precipitation Data #6

We need to find an appropriate precipitation data source. Once this has been identified we need to write code such that we can download the data we need over space-time. Once code has been written we need to download the data over space-time as defined in the roadmap to the VACC.

The SSMI looks great but I have some questions:

  1. The data product says liquid water. What does this mean for us when is snows?
  2. Can you find any literature where this was used as a precipitation measure, preferably in a predictive model?

After making some progress on the precip data, I learned that the SSMI only has data for the ocean. At this point I am pretty certain that cru might be our best bet for anything.

OK let's table precipitation for now and focus on getting the snow data. Absent a real-time stream precipitation may not be as important for us. I'm also still curious how often it actually rains in the majority of our study area. One of our goals is to have models making predictions starting in March (by which time we may have only seen snow anyway).

  1. Is the data reliable in the northern latitudes?
  2. Can you figure out how often cru data comes out?
