The check to see if the sex of the person corresponds with the role in the family (HUSB/WIFE) is a good one, but my suggestion is to qualify it as a warning. The reason being that the GEDCOM specification does't allow for same sex marriages, so no HUSB+HUSB or WIFE+WIFE, but in reality it's a fact of life. So a work around used by vendors of family tree programs is to just fill in the ID in the HUSB and WIFE fields in order to record the relation and to only look at the sex of the person for determining the role. This of course get more complicated when there are childen in the same-sex marriage and have to display two fathers or two mothers.
