Mobility Management Center Monthly Activity Report #642

Closed atdservicebot closed 4 years ago

atdservicebot commented 5 years ago

Description

Jim Dale has requested monthly reports on progress from the Mobility Management Center, formerly known as the Transportation Management Center (TMC). PIO has met this request in a couple different ways:

Arterial Management would like to publish the kind of progress that the MMC is making, since much of their work is not as visible, though they do publish on social media occasionally. This kind of reporting is important to see how they're doing on targets and to communicate with stakeholders such as City Council Offices.

Solution requested

I discussed this with Jen D., and it may be feasible, efficient and effective to have an operations dashboard that reports monthly progress. Currently, there is an Operations Overview dashboard that shows our assets and year-to-date activities: https://transportation.austintexas.io/ops-overview/

I'm thinking that we could improve this to be formatted similarly to the Shared Micromobility Dashboard: https://transportation.austintexas.io/micromobility-data.

I'm happy to sit down with Arterial Management and the Data teams to discuss which metrics are feasible to include and how information could be best presented.

Desired metrics (some of these may be difficult to include since there might not be any progress in certain metrics for every month):

Desired features:

Other features that would be nice to have, but don't have to have:

How will we know that our solution is successful? If a City Council Office could access this information and understand it without asking follow-up questions. Also, if the community could readily access, learn and understand more about what goes behind transportation/mobility management.

Users City Council offices, peer cities, individuals interested in smart city and safe transportation initiatives.

Would this application affect any of the Strategic Direction 2023 "Mobility" indicators? System efficiency and congestion, Transportation cost, Accessibility to and equity of multi-modal transportation choices, Safety, Condition of transportation-related infrastructure

Would this application support any of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan goals? Commuter Delay, Health & Safety, Sustainability, Innovation, change the way we think about what's possible, and set an example for the rest of the country.

Describe any workarounds you currently have in place or alternative solutions you've considered. We had previously created a static PDF report from month to month, and then transitioned to a newsletters spotlight. This involved one person from MMC, one person from PIO, and a graphic designer. However, often if one person was out of town, the development of the report would be delayed. We're hoping that automation will make reporting an easier process.

Is there anything else we should know? There isn't a strict timeline. We can sit down with Arterial Management to discuss expectations.

How have other divisions/departments/cities addressed similar challenges? We do have other dashboards that track progress of projects and installation of assets, but not one that shows a timeline of progress. I can't seem to find another examples of this...

Spoke to @johnclary about this — existing enhancements and feature requests might cover a good number of these metrics. We'll need to review and prioritize those, then follow up on how to capture the data itself. (Much is infrequently tracked, tracked in spreadsheets, etc. ) cc/ @tcwcodes

After conversations with @tcwcodes @johnclary and @JaceDeloney today, here's our plan moving forward.

johnclary commented 4 years ago

@JaceDeloney i went ahead and slapped the BI Discovery label on this, because I'd like to track this as a use case for BI.

Also, please include me in your sync up with devs to discuss ETL and data needs.

@JaceDeloney @tylerwhitson - I think I might have jumped the gun when I moved this to In Progress two months ago. This is backlog, yes?

JaceDeloney commented 4 years ago

Yes, as far as I know, this should still be in the backlog.

amenity commented 4 years ago

@tylerwhitson @johnclary - was there an issue for the ETL work that was started to get the signal timing and video detection data on Socrata?

johnclary commented 4 years ago

@amenity see #1241 in this epic.

This was completed a few months back but never closed. MMC has what they need to pull in the new datasets into a Power BI view. We are meeting with Lance tomorrow to discuss the steps required to do so.
