Some kind of return-to-town button that only becomes useable just after getting an upgrade from somewhere that is not town-so you can't softlock yourself in an upgrade cave.

Also, possibly, make every upgrade that uses water give you the water bar if you get it first? I got grenade first and couldn't progress because I had no water bar. (on Casual)
