Move domain from Godaddy to somewhere sane #14

Open goldenmeanie opened 9 years ago

goldenmeanie commented 9 years ago

We should create a Code Island owned account with a reputable registrar and move the code-island.org domain (and any others) to it.

Suggestions: dnsimple.com pairnic.com hover.com

Preferably two.

zer0dave commented 9 years ago

Is there an actual issue or is this a reflexive move? No other site I've hosted has had any weird requirements like github does for domains.

Not really related to DNS troubles. GoDaddy is a crappy company.

As a separate issue we should be building brigade infrastructure and not leaning on personal (I'm assuming here : ) ) accounts.

zer0dave commented 9 years ago

Agreed. We should definitely have an account for the brigade. And I have heard a lot of godaddy horror stories. I'd like to know more about the suggestions made as I've not heard of any of them. Pro's, con's, etc.

Networksolutions is the next largest I'm familiar with. On Dec 2, 2014 8:03 PM, "Alex Taylor" notifications@github.com wrote:

Pair is an OG domain registrar that I have been using for over a decade. They offer all the things you need and upsell you zero, for a reasonable price. Interface is clunky.

Hover is the new kid on the block, but they're owned by Tucows. Nice interface, friendly support. They are third on my list because they are somewhat incompatible with Heroku.

Dnsimple I have no personal experience with but they were recommended to me by smart people. They were DDOSed in the last couple days. So setting up failover (fallover? I can never remember) to a second provider might be a good idea, but not a priority until we are closer to hosting mission critical resources.

Did I miss anything @joealba or @dannychapman?

We appear to still be on GoDaddy

zer0dave commented 8 years ago

I should probably transfer ownership of the domain to someone else. You wanna take this Alex? On Nov 5, 2015 2:13 PM, "Alex Taylor" notifications@github.com wrote:

I'll set up a Code Island account that we can transfer it to.
