Currently unused but worth merging at some point and already looking for feedback.

I'm still a little bit fuzzy on how some of the pieces fit together, but I don't have any complaints about the code itself and this PR is getting pretty big. So I'm going to go ahead and merge it, and we can address any issues that may come up separately.
