Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 #5419

Open misaochan opened 6 months ago

misaochan commented 6 months ago

Hi all, how have you been? Apologies for the absence, been quite busy with work recently. :)

I should have a bit more free time for volunteering this year, and was wondering if anyone is interested in working on the app during the Wikimedia Hackathon 2024? I'm thinking I might apply to attend. Would be fantastic to be able to work together again for a few days, maybe on a new mini feature? :)

kanahia1 commented 6 months ago

Hi @misaochan is this opportunity to work under you open to everyone πŸ˜ƒ. I am really interested in hackathons since they encourage teamwork and growth. Our team was finalist in Smart India Hackathon'23 (~500 teams per problem statement) organized by Government of India and I have also won Gold in ScaleUp Hackathon.

Here's my website for your reference https://kanahia.notion.site/kanahia/Hi-I-m-Kanahia-992f9f4edf834bc5983fcd4153b787ab

misaochan commented 6 months ago

Hi @kanahia1 , glad to see that you are interested! :) Everyone is welcome to register and if I do attend I would love to collaborate with you. However, unfortunately we are not the ones providing travel scholarships (if I understand your post correctly), Wikimedia handles the applications directly. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024/Participate contains the registration form for the hackathon as well as the scholarship application form. Scholarship applications do close on 5th Jan as far as I'm aware.

nicolas-raoul commented 6 months ago

Welcome back Jo! Sounds exciting! πŸ™‚

misaochan commented 6 months ago

Thanks @nicolas-raoul ! If my application is approved, I was thinking about working on a basic prototype for #3356 . Probably the prototype wouldn't actually upload anything to Commons yet (since it wouldn't be ready), but we could test the flow of the game and gauge whether people find it interesting. The advantage of doing this at a hackathon is that we essentially have a big pool of testers available for the prototype, which is something that can be difficult to find otherwise. :) What do you think?

Pinging @sivaraam @neslihanturan @maskaravivek @ashishkumar468 @madhurgupta10 @VojtechDostal as well.

shankarpriyank commented 6 months ago

I have applied to attend, I also had a look at #3356 and its really interesting would love to collaborate if everything aligns!

neslihanturan commented 6 months ago

Hey all :) I also miss the project a lot and hoping to be able to volunteering in the new year. The previous year was chaotic and busy for me. I liked the idea a lot @misaochan :) I will apply for it too then. Exciting ^^

madhurgupta10 commented 6 months ago

Hi @misaochan, I would be happy to participate along with you all, the idea seems very exciting. Looking forward to it :)

misaochan commented 6 months ago

That's awesome, looking forward to it!! :) Today is the last day for the travel scholarship applications I think, hope everyone has got theirs in?

madhurgupta10 commented 6 months ago

@misaochan I have submitted my application, lets hope it gets approved.

sivaraam commented 5 months ago

Good to see you back @misaochan ! It's also great to see the interest in getting together at the Hackathon to hack something on the app. πŸ™‚

I suppose I may not be able to attend the Hackathon in person. I'll be glad to support remotely if anything is necessary, though.

Meanwhile, just in case any of are looking for issues to pick and contribute, feel free to checkout the https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/labels/help%20needed label to see of there's anything of interest to you.

Specifically, we could use some help with issue #5197. Toolforge grid is shutting down by 14 Feb 2023. I'm unsure if @whym is available to handle it within that time. So, any help on that front would be nice.

Happy hacking!

kanahia1 commented 5 months ago

Hi @misaochan, I have received mail for full scholarship πŸŽ‰ Looking forward to work under your guidance ☺️

nicolas-raoul commented 5 months ago

Fantastic, congratulations! πŸ™‚

kanahia1 commented 5 months ago

Thanks @nicolas-raoul πŸ˜ƒ for being such a amazing guide and mentor.

misaochan commented 5 months ago

Hey @kanahia1 , congratulations! :) I received a full scholarship as well, but I need to sort out some things before I can confirm attendance. Tentatively looking forward to collaborating with you! ;)

@madhurgupta10 @neslihanturan @shankarpriyank how about you folks?

shankarpriyank commented 5 months ago

Hi @misaochan, I received a full scholarship too I should be at the hackathon if I donot run into visa issues! Looking forward to collaborating with you all!

neslihanturan commented 4 months ago

Hey hey, I am also in my visa process. Hope to see you all there:)

misaochan commented 4 months ago

Hi all, unfortunately I wasn't able to resolve a work schedule conflict, so I can't attend the hackathon in-person this year. :( I should be able to try and participate remotely, if you guys still feel like working on my proposed task this year. Or if you want to take something else this year, we can try and make #3356 happen next year? :)

nicolas-raoul commented 3 months ago

So, who is going actually? Kanahia+Priyank+Nes, anyone else? πŸ™‚ Nes now has experience with Wikimedia Hackathons so I am sure it will go well! Apologies if you did it already, but it would probably be very productive for everyone going + Josephine to have a call and discuss goals&strategies.

kanahia1 commented 3 months ago

@nicolas-raoul, I have applied for visa, waiting for the acceptance

neslihanturan commented 2 months ago

Hey hey, I got my Visa acceptance so I will be there. ^^ I would love to have a meeting with everyone interested this week to get best out of this collaboration.

misaochan commented 2 months ago

@neslihanturan that's fantastic! :) Sorry I've been out of the loop quite a bit, are you all still on Zulip?

neslihanturan commented 2 months ago

Hey hey, should we discuss which issue we will work at the hackathon? This suggestion made at hackathon phabricator inspired me to work on something about gender gap. I am interested in this project as I sometimes volunteer for WiR events. So I have created an issue #5707 where we can narrow the scope together.
