I'd recommend linking to the GBIF backbone taxanomy instead. GBIF aggregates bio-diversity data - also from EOL - and has a very good API. I link to GBIF from Tsammalex, and other projects.
GBIF also provides API access to occurrence data, which is really nice. E.g. you can overlay observations of a species with local names for it - and maybe infer loan directions from this?
Excellent, so we can even use the API to semi-automatically retrieve items.
