it would be nice if the badge project wouldn't favor a proprietary software alternative like Github in the process of creating badges. i understand that this project is developped on github and a lot of people are here (myself included), but it would be interesting to support other instances of compliant code-hosting platforms. Gitlab is one of them: it has an issue tracker, CI, and all sorts of things to make a project capable of complying with the criterias here.

Ideally, more repositories services would be supported as well...

We'd love to support more repos in our login and automation code. We do not require any particular repo to log in or get a badge - it's just that our current login & automation focus on GitHub. We only focus on GitHub because GitHub is so common. If you'd like to submit some patches along these lines, let's talk!

i unfortunately won't be able to help in the short term, as my free/volunteer time is shrinking. ;) but it's just a "wishlist" item anyways, thanks for the feedback, good to know there's an opening!
