The arrow buttons are perfect for switching instantly between desktops. However they require that you maintain a mental image of left/right position which doesn't have any logical basis (other that in task view they are positioned that way).
A solution to this would be to add the option "Clicking desktop number in tray toggles latest desktop". That way you could change to the last desktop used without remembering if it is left or right of your current desktop.
Alternatively it could just cycle through all of the desktops. Personally this would work for me since I only ever use two.
Personally, I'm only displaying the arrow keys now. If I had arrow keys and the desktop number, I guess it wouldn't matter. But all three take up a lot of space in the taskbar.
