  1. [x] What topics should the survey cover?
  2. [x] What kinds of questions would we ask to probe these topics?

You might need to define Open Science for the purpose of your survey. There are more resources that could be added to https://github.com/dasaderi/WhyNotOpenScience/blob/master/Links/ExistingMaterial but that depends on the areas you would like to cover. Have I missed those in the repo?

@pherterich thank you for your comment! We will define Open Science in the survey, but we are trying to do it in an unbiased way right now. We do define OS in the readme.md but perhaps we can do better? Ideas? Thanks!

Your definition seems to focus on reproducible science which isn't bad. @bmkramer come up with a very wide definition in their blog https://im2punt0.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/defining-open-science-definitions/ which I like a lot because it provides so much more opportunities and benefits. I just think it's important for you to decide which parts you'd like to cover so feedback etc on the questions can be tailored. Based on experience from the last Mozilla Global Sprints, it's helpful to make this clear before, otherwise you spend two days having this discussion with potential contributors and don't make real progress.

Thank you so much @pherterich, this is super useful! I'll add this link to the Links folder and see how we can fit this info in our survey. Do you think it'd be better to be general or specific? I mean, if we are too specific than we exclude a bunch of people, but if we are too broad than we won't capture the information we want. A related problem is being able to capture what open science means in different disciplines. I'm hoping to get feedback from researchers in different fields. Our pilot survey is almost done. I'd love if you could take that and give us your opinion. Thanks again!

@amiefairs @pherterich I updated the README and added some links to existing material in the Links folder. For the purposes of the survey since we want to direct it to researchers in academia (early-career as well as professors) I thought the definition by Foster – although narrow – was the most appropriate. What do you think?

pherterich commented 7 years ago

Focusing on the reproducible science part might be best for your audience, otherwise you might try to cover too much. Maybe refer to it as open & reproducible science as well to make it clearer that this is the part you will focus on.

I won't be able to fully take part in the MozSprint as I'll be out of the office, but I will try and make sure I test your survey and provide feedback when I can find a slot.
