catch up with main after latest release #1304

Somehow the 0900_release branch that I created as a placeholder is protected. I can't delete it and start over.

Expecting this to be a simple fast-forward merge . . . ?

. . . but not the case apparently. I am not authorized to merge, and GH is not showing me the merge conflicts. Hmmm . . .
