Here's a dumb question that, I think, relates to this issue: what is the policy of the City of Chicago with regard to plowing side streets?

From the City of Chicago website

Streets & Sanitation is responsible for maintaining winter roadway safety on a route system of 9,456 lane miles. Our routes consist of city main streets, side streets and Lake Shore Drive. The expressway system that travels through Chicago is maintained by the State of Illinois' Department of Transportation, IDOT.

During a snow program Streets & Sanitation’s first priority is to clear our main routes and Lake Shore Drive. We will generally remain on these primary routes until a storm subsides. Once arterial streets are patrolled and deemed safe, Snow Command turns attention to the side streets/residential.

While most side streets are cleared by full size Snow Fighting Trucks, Chicago's narrowest side streets are cleaned by a fleet of 26 smaller plows. These include 4x4 pick up trucks with plows which are narrow plows with heavy salt capacity

My take on this is they take responsibility for all side streets, even if the street is too narrow for a standard plow.

Ah. This makes sense-- both the policy and your take on it. It seems like maybe it would be a good thing to have page on ClearStreets that addresses this. The "who made this" section of the /about page comes closest: http://clearstreets.org/about#who-made-this, but it seems like some robust info about the practical matters (when will my street be cleared?) would be really useful. Could be helpful in the #15 "we're not the City" front, too.

Also, a more robust data page as proposed in #17 might be a good place to address this. "When did the storm subside?" is a great piece of knowable data that could help inform residents. (I love that word, "subside", btw).

I agree.

To do that well, we need to get a better idea of the city's scope of discretion.

We should start with Street and Sans flack for these questions.
