Many icons confusing users. #46

Hi guys I have seen many new users by clicking the wrong icon and asking for help in the Facebook group. There are several icons to confuse. Even more by the wallet is called 'Paymetheus' and the correct icon to open in normal launch is 'Decred'. pay_icon or Have you thought about putting in a submenu and change names? menu

These extra icons make many 'new users' ask for help or give up using.

Icon is already fixed.

I can understand where there may be confusion regarding the many shortcuts but each of them does serve a purpose. Good point about search being useless. We could rename them to make them clearer. Perhaps:

The standalone options need to stay IMO. I don't want to force users to have to run dcrd on their Windows laptop when they may already have an instance set up on a server somewhere.

The standalone options also give us more flexibility to have a sort of dcrd GUI application running in the future which the standalone Paymetheus can connect to, or when SPV support is added, run Paymetheus without any dcrd at all.

Well really these are config options that are masquerading as shortcuts. So there should be just 1 shortcut and proper config options. But then the launcher would have to prompt everytime and not auto-start?

jrick commented 7 years ago

When the launcher starts paymetheus it could pass some flags that run it without the connect options dialog. I've wanted to do this for some time but haven't been able to get to it yet. There is a PM issue already opened tracking this. That is a separate issue than the icons.

jrick commented 7 years ago

I have a better idea.

The PM launcher could present a dialog providing options at startup whether to start dcrd on behalf of the user and whether to run in testnet mode. This brings us down to a single start menu shortcut. We could also integrate the launcher process into PM itself so that taskbar pinning works.

edit: sorry jolan this was your idea, i didn't read your post too closely first time

I have no issue removing all but one icon. I have stated in the past that having >1 icon is silly.

The only argument for more than one icon would be a testnet one. Developers can create their own shortcuts if they are adamant about it.

marcopeereboom commented 7 years ago

I think we should have an option in paymetheus that relaunches itself in either testnet or mainnet. So clicking decred always starts in mainnet but the user then can click "switch to testnet" and then paymetheus relaunches in testnet mode. This setting should be persistent.

jrick commented 7 years ago

If we do the launcher change I am totally on board with a single icon.

@marcopeereboom i don't like that idea because it becomes impossible to run both mainnet and testnet at the same time.

marcopeereboom commented 7 years ago

I do not want a gaming launcher type dialog. That is pushing the N icons problem into an N selections launcher.

jrick commented 7 years ago

I honestly have no idea what you just said. WTF does gaming have to do with any of this?

marcopeereboom commented 7 years ago

Gaming launchers often do what you suggest. Prompt the user to click on stuff before it launches the game with said settings. I don't think that is the right solution for us.

jrick commented 7 years ago

I play plenty of games and haven't seen a dialog like that in a decade or more.

But anyways, these options must exist somewhere. You don't like them in the start menu shortcuts, and you don't like them in the launcher. I honestly have no clue where to put them while keeping all of the current functionality. Don't think that it's only us who are using the current standalone options.

Hi, guys I've tried illustrating an option to improve usability:

launch

Edit: Direct to Wallet, if normal launcher = Skip a Login screen Of course there is 'seed' steps, etc.

marcopeereboom commented 7 years ago

We have landed on making all icons except the decred one optional.
