What is the need, benefit and/or specification for this enhancement?

If the desire is to save space (money) on S3 storage then compression could 
help, but it may be negligible since large files (photos, music, video) benefit 
little from compression.

Additionally, why not just compress files *before* copying them to a s3fs 
mount? I'm not convinced that s3fs needs to be able to do this under the hood.
