small code improvements #2

I always think code style is important. Would you be interested in a PR to introduce rubocop (and fix highlighted issues)? If so I'll prepare one. Thanks for this gem. Very nice!

Partially merged @ d0e00b4712c65b02704f1472645c187c8ecc3031. Omitted early-return style and ternary assignments.
