Bulk – Consolidated Marketplace for Group Buys & Artisan Commissioned Goods

Purpose

Bulk will create a marketplace for those interested in buying products that are exorbitantly expensive when purchased in quantities intended for a single user by pooling resources and executing group (bulk) buys. It will also allow buyers to pool resources to commission artists/craftsman/artisans to produce limited runs of specific items.

Bulk will help buyers obtain the bulk price (wholesale) by removing the middle man, passing the lower price onto the buyers directly. There are also artisan products that are only produced when the artisan can ensure that they will be sold. Bulk will help consumers obtain access to these products as well.

The District will help to consolidate group buys, covering all niches, that are currently taking place in message boards across the internet.

Description

Bulk will operate as a marketplace for buyers interested in purchasing products (“buys”) at wholesale prices. A community member will post an item for sale and provide details of price, minimum (and maximum number of units that must be sold, location requirements, delivery methods and deadline for purchase.

The community member who posts the product is the “Principal” buyer and is responsible for negotiating the price beforehand with the “seller”. Members who wish to join the buy become “buyers” and will be responsible for fulfilling their purchase requirements at the time the order is executed by the Principal. If the contract between "Principal" and "Seller" may be entered into a smart contract when feasible for ease of payment.

A buy can be open to anyone the “Principal” allows. Some buys may be local only, for example large sacks of flour or grain. Other buys such as digital playing cards may be delivered worldwide. Delivery costs shall be provided by the buyer in the original buy description and delivery is the Principal’s responsibility.

A buy can be from any business or person selling a product including but not limited to a large manufacturer, aliexpress, digital product creator, or an artisan.

Prospective buyers can view the reputation score of Principals prior to purchasing products. The search function can be used to view buys by product type, geographic area, price, delivery method, delivery price, Principal reputation and additional categories as needed.

Rewards for Principals can be a small percentage of the overall transaction price or even free product. The fee shall be described in the buy description and will be in addition to small District fee for each buy.

Examples

  1. Bob is a homebrewer and wants to be able to purchase grain at less than $1.79/lb. Bob calls Briess Malting and finds that he can have a pallet of grain delivered for $0.70/lb. Each sack of grain on the pallet is 55lbs so this “buy” would save all buyers approximately $60. As the Principal, Bob gets the firm to allow him 30 days to fulfill the order. Bob posts the buy onto Bulk, listing for 30 days, pickup only (no delivery) and he agrees to receive his bag free. When Bob’s buy is filled he places the order and arranges for delivery and pickup.

  2. Lily finds a local leatherworker near her hometown who supplies shops in Portland, OR with one of kind messenger bags that usually sell for $175. Lily forms an agreement with the leatherworker that will allow her acquire 10 bags for only $100 each. The leatherworker needs to know quickly. Lily lists a buy for 10 custom leather messenger bags, $100/each +$10 delivery and fees. The listing is for U.S. residents or International plus actual shipping costs. The buy must be filled in 15 days.

Risks

  1. The risks of purchasing through Bulk are the same as currently making a group buy. This risk is mitigated by the reputation score of the Principal. The Principal should also provide documentation of any agreement between themselves and the Seller.
  2. There are similar sites like Massdrop, however with Bulk, many members will have the opportunity to negotiate and broker deals and to become Principals. The profit taken by a company should also be higher than that taken by the Principal and District. The products and discounts available on Bulk should grow as Principals build relationships with real life sellers.

I did add 'general' but the unclassified tag will be to highlight unique ideas that are hard to define a market segment.
