https://github.com/dotmesh-io/dotmesh/pull/695 introduced a slightly complex "fastdiff" implementation that could use (a) documenting the design of and (b) more thorough e2e tests touching the caching cases

Need to get some test coverage for this asap as we already saw issues with a number of previous implementations.
